Bolivia: justice requested 30 years in prison for former de facto president Áñez

Jeanine Áñez could be convicted for her role in the Sacaba and Senkata massacres, in which 20 people died and another 200 were injured in November 2019.

The Bolivian Prosecutor's Office requested this Monday a 30-year prison sentence for the former de facto president Jeanine Áñez by formally accusing her of "genocide" for her role in the Sacaba and Senkata massacre in November 2019, in which 20 people died and another 200 were injured. The Public Ministry extended its request for prison to another 17 people, including several of its trusted collaborators, as well as former senior military and police officers, according to the state news agency ABI, the local newspaper El Duty and picked up the Europa Press news agency. “Tax charges have been filed against 18 people, including Jeanine Áñez Chávez, who at the time of the incident was serving as president of the Plurinational State of Bolivia,” reported the attorney general, Juan Lanchipa, at a press conference. Among those mentioned are the then Government Ministers; Arturo Carlos Murillo; of Defense, Luis Fernando López; and that of Hydrocarbons, Víctor Hugo Zamora, whom the Prosecutor's Office accuses of "committing the crime of genocide and seriously affecting the most important legal good, which is life." Added to the list are the names of the then commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, Sergio Carlos Orellana; the chief of the General Staff, Pablo Arturo Guerra; the inspector general of the Armed Forces, Aldo Bravo Méndez; and the respective commanders of the Navy, Air Force and Army, among others.
