About 7,000 US auto workers join strike

The president of the powerful auto workers union, United Auto Workers (UAW), Shawn Fain, called this Friday for 7,000 more workers to join the strike in the sector, which has been demanding wage improvements for two weeks. The call concerns two plants, one of Ford in Chicago, Illinois, and another of General Motors in Lansing, Michigan, whose employees will join the 18,600 already shut down for two weeks in search of salary improvements. Striking workers received support this week from President Joe Biden, who picketed a General Motors auto parts distribution center in Belleville, suburban Detroit, on Tuesday. The president considered it legitimate for the union to demand a 40% salary increase for the new four-year collective agreement.

Employees at two plants, one of Ford in Chicago, Illinois, and another of General Motors in Lansing, Michigan, also cease their activities in search of salary increases. President Joe Biden this week supported the measure, which has now been in place for two weeks.
